Advertising policy

What we will and will not sell, and the wall between the people who sell it and the people who write.

Separation

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom. No advertiser, sponsor or affiliate partner sees an article before publication, and none has any influence over what we cover, how we score it, or where it ranks in a list.

What we accept

  • Display advertising, clearly bounded and visually distinct from articles
  • Newsletter sponsorships, labelled as sponsored within the email
  • Affiliate links, disclosed on any page that contains them

What we refuse

  • Paid links inserted into editorial articles
  • Guest posts, sponsored posts, or link insertions of any kind
  • Payment for a review, a score, or a position in a ranking
  • Advertising placed to look like editorial content
  • Any arrangement conditional on positive coverage
  • Advertising from a company whose product is under review, for the duration of that review

Advertising we will not run

Gambling, predatory lending, adult content, weight-loss and supplement claims, cryptocurrency speculation, and anything making health claims we cannot verify. We also decline advertising that mimics our own design or uses our score component.

Labelling

Anything commercial is labelled at the top of the unit, in plain language, in type no smaller than the surrounding text. We use the word sponsored or advertisement. We do not use ambiguous phrases like partner content or brought to you by.

Reader complaints about advertising

If an ad on this site is misleading, intrusive, or looks like editorial, tell us and we will remove it: contact@uncommonbits.com.
