Sponsored content policy

If we ever publish sponsored content, here is exactly how it will be handled.

Current position

UncommonBits does not currently publish sponsored articles. This policy exists so that the rules are set before there is any commercial pressure to bend them.

If that changes

Any sponsored article would carry all of the following, without exception:

  • A label reading Sponsored at the very top of the page, above the headline, in the same size type as the headline
  • The sponsor named in that label
  • A visually distinct background so it cannot be mistaken for editorial
  • No UB Score, no ranking position, and no star rating of any kind
  • Exclusion from all reviews, comparisons and best-of lists
  • Exclusion from the homepage editorial sections
  • rel="sponsored" on every outbound link
  • A byline that is not one of our reviewers

What a sponsor can and cannot do

A sponsor may approve the copy of their own sponsored article. A sponsor may not review, influence or receive advance sight of any editorial article, including reviews of their own products or their competitors’ products.

Reviews are never sponsored

There is no price at which a review can be bought. If a company offers, we will decline, and we reserve the right to report the offer.

Free products and temporary access

We buy what we test. Where a vendor provides temporary access we could not otherwise obtain, that is stated at the top of the review, not in a footnote. We do not accept permanent free licences, hardware we keep, or paid travel.
